Caribbean demand did not disappear in September 2026. It changed destination.

The Dominican Republic received 684,831 visitors in September, up 16.4% on September 2025, according to Tourism Minister David Collado. That month, Cancun airport lost 8.1% of its passengers and ASUR's Mexican airports fell 6.1%, as Reportur reported on 8 October 2026. The report links Cancun's drop to sargassum, pricier flights driven by high oil prices and more cautious spending.

None of those causes is fixed with a lower rate.

Build a destination comp set

Your hotel comp set lost the same travelers you did. Add the rival destination to your weekly review, Punta Cana next to Cancun, and check three signals before you touch price:

  1. Air capacity and fares into your airport versus the rival's.
  2. Pickup by source market: which feeder market slowed down.
  3. Rates at the rival destination: if comps there are pushing price, you are not facing a soft market. You are losing share.

Should you cut rate when arrivals fall? Not first. If guests chose another beach, a discount gives away margin without bringing them back. See also the Dominican Republic's record visitor year and its one fragile number.
